Get Ready for Halloween with Spooky Fun

It is the perfect time of the year-- FALL! Now that the trees on campus are finally shedding its green, they reveal beautiful colors of oranges, yellows, and reds.

It is time to think spooky.

As kids, Halloween was a fun time to have a sugar crash and spend all month waiting to wear the perfect costume. Just because we are, technically, “adults” there is no reason to turn down fun.

Here are some things that you can do to spice up for this ominous month!

As college students, we face the cold, harsh reality of growing up.

But where does one draw that line?

I still love dressing up as a skeleton or cat. Point is that we are all internally kids waiting for free candy and that sugar rush. Seriously, dress up. It doesn’t matter what type of costume, just show some Halloween spirit as we experience the fun of college.

  • DIY is the best way to go when you are too broke to even buy ramen. There is a Dollar Store right by Target so you wouldn’t have to splurge. If you can’t spend anything, think creatively and take advantage of the supplies that you have already! Pinterest has some cool ideas to check out if you happen to get stuck.

  • If you are the type of person to go with a group, then have fun dressing-up with your closest friends. Just think about a whole crew walking in as the Trolls. I would so be the Guy Diamond troll! Go simple or go crazy as there are no rules!

  • Now that we have the most crucial part of this spooky month let's talk activities! OU houses countless organizations. Even if you are not part of one, it is important to be involved or throw your spin on things! Have a good time and take advantage of OU's community!

  • Throw a Halloween party and invite the people in your halls as this is costume mandatory! Sure, it might be cramped, just have fun with it!

  • Our campus hosts a sundry of ghost stories. Grab your friends and walk around to see if you can spot a ghost or two! Here’s a little peek into what you might see --- or hear. According to Jeffrey Provine, OU ghost tour guide, there is a lot more to OU and some major creep factors. In the summer of 1986, there was a boy who attended OU. The boy went inside the Cate Cafeteria and peered into the basement. Curiously, he wandered around until he came upon a dumbwaiter. He decided to crawl in just to have a bit of fun. He heard a sound as someone called the very dumbwaiter he was in and his head was struck in the rapid ascension of the device until his head was cut clean off. Even though the dumbwaiter no longer exists, it is said you can still hear the noises of the banging of his head. You can go on ghost tours and hear stories much like this one!

  • BOO! If you are looking to brighten someone’s day, then play this anonymous game of “You’ve Been BOO’ed!” The game is simple as just get together some treats and Halloween knick-knacks and wrap it up. Print out a simple “You’ve Been BOO’ed” card and knock on someone’s door. RUN so no one can see you as this is done preferably at night. Hopefully, they take the hint and BOO others too!

The last thing that I hope to see everyone do is to decorate pumpkins! This is one of the only times in the year where it is acceptable to go to a pumpkin patch and carve fun or scary designs. There is a local pumpkin farm called TG Farms and they don’t only have pumpkins, but they have a corn maze and petting zoo! I have seen so many videos of creative carvings that legitimately are scary or you could go with a more modern, funny route. The choice is yours, but choose wisely! If you don’t like the mess, then that’s okay! You can always paint pumpkins or draw with marker, but be warned as it is easy to smear. Or you could just use it for decoration. That’s fine too!

Hopefully, you will walk away with some ideas of what to do to keep up with the spookiness of October for yourself and friends. Remember be safe and have fun as we all deserve it sometimes.

Happy Halloween!
