When you think of college, often it is a picture-perfect image that reflects a joyful experience. It is a door opening for you in this new part of your life. While college is fun and sure there are parties galore, the one thing that drags you back to reality is money.

I was lucky enough to go to Canadian Valley Technology Center for my cosmetology license. After two years of grueling work, sweat and tears, I was ready to have a job in the field I had studied so hard for. Unfortunately, I was overwhelmed with the classes and information I received within my first semester here at OU.

I did not get a job as most salons require full-time or part-time. As a college student, I cannot afford booth rent, which is paying for space and sometimes all of the products that you use at the salon you work at. Also, as a cosmetologist, we have to build a clientele or else we don’t get paid much or even regularly depending on the salon you work at. This was not an option for me as I am broke as it is. I knew I could not work in a salon.

Despite this, I moved forward. I wanted to create a little space within my dorm so I could do hair or nails.

I bought a stool, a TV tray, and have been building my product selection up from nothing. I have been fortunate enough to have friends who got my back.

I have done an ombre, highlights, and an all-over color service on them. I have given cuts and color to create a look that would make my friends happy.

Since they have my work on their head they are like walking billboards for me. As a result, I have gained clients. Even though I could not work in a salon, I could still further my skills and make money doing something that I enjoy doing. It is hard to make money in college, especially when the career you are qualified for requires full-time.

However, with a little creativity and perseverance, you could make even the smallest things work.
